Playlist for Great Sacred Music for Sunday, January 1, 2012

December 31, 2011 by Robert Kennedy Leave a Comment

The first Great Sacred Music program of 2012 begins with Matins. Well, at
least the music that would be sung at the morning service in an English
cathedral. That includes the psalms for the day sung to Anglican chant. I
hope you will find the variety of moods and the general style of these
five chants as fascinating as I do. Herbert Howells’ setting of the
morning canticles for King’s College is universally acclaimed as one of
the best of its genre.

Finally, at the end of the show comes an organ sonata by Quebec composer
and organist Raymond Daveluy. You may never have heard of him but it was
he who almost singlehandedly started the organ revolution in Montreal back
in the 1960s. The 5 manual Von Beckerath organ at St. Joseph’s Oratory
which he championed is in a word, magnificent. So is Maitre Daveluy’s
organ sonata.

Happy New Year!

Rob
