Momentum Choir to sing for Canadian PM

NIAGARA, ON — Julia Haluska wants you to listen to her. Listen to the sound of her voice. The way she phrases notes. How her voice helps build a complete piece of music.  She wants you to see past the two words that society often labels her with — development disability — and see her for who she really is.

“This is about outshining my disability,” said the 49-year-old member of the Momentum Choir. “It’s a way for all of us to share our passion.”  On Tuesday, Haluska joined the more than 50 other members of the choir, all of them Niagara residents with developmental disabilities, to start polishing a performance for the group’s most important show to date — singing live at the House of Commons on Oct. 1.

“We’ll be in the rotunda and after the session in the House is finished, (St. Catharines) MP Rick Dykstra will invite the MPs, including the prime minister, to come and listen to us,” said choir director Mendelt Hoekstra. “We’re very excited about it.”  The group has been in operation for the last six years, although only as a charity group for the last two, Hoekstra said.
