In episode 40, Dr. William Baker discusses the choral audition process for community and professional ensembles. According to Dr. Baker, during the initial screening, the director should clearly articulate the vision and goals of the ensemble to ensure the candidate understands the expectations for membership.
For the audition, it is suggested that the candidate perform a prepared solo. Dr. Baker prefers solos be performed without accompaniment to more clearly evaluate a performer’s vocal quality, intonation, and expressiveness. It is also suggested that during the audition, candidates demonstrate an ability to sing collectively with others. To assess this skill, Dr. Baker places the candidate in a small ensemble with four to eight current members, evaluating the candidate’s intonation and blend.
