March 6, 2024 by Micah Bland Leave a Comment

In Part 3 of Dr. Terry J. Barham’s discussion of the boy’s changing voice, Dr. Barham shares strategies for maintaining a boy’s interest in singing.

Recommendations include,

  • Select upbeat music
  • Establish a positive atmosphere
  • Offer rewards to those who bring a friend to choir
  • Avoid selecting music that might embarrass the boys
  • Select music that fits the boys ranges, voice types, and skill level
  • Have middle school boys sing with a high school men’s chorus.
  • Avoid down time and always have a goal
  • Plan occasional SATB collaborations
  • Use choreography tastefully
  • Plan fun social activities
  • Maintain a sense of humor
  • Explain and describe the voice change process
