Should Choir Members Be Forced To Sing Solo?

When it comes to choir members singing by themselves, there are generally two schools of thought:

1. Singers in a choir should never be forced to sing by themselves.

2. All singers need to be graded individually for how they perform because choir is a skills-based class.

My approach differs from the two.
