Adding Canons to the Canon: Franz Joseph Haydn’s Die Weltlichen Kanons by Alyssa Cossey

“Haydn wrote fifty-six unaccompanied canons that are included in his collected works, but no modern-day choral editions currently exist. Of the fifty-six pieces, the first ten canons represent each of the Ten Commandments and include both German and English texts. While these works were written during Haydn’s London years, originally printed in 1810 by Breitkopf & Härtel, it is his later secular canons that are the primary focus of this article.”

Foundations of Music Literacy: Jerome Bruner’s Contributions to Choral Music Education by Carol Krueger and Jill Wilson

“Jerome Bruner (1915-2016), distinguished cognitive psychologist and author of The Process of Education (1960), focused much of his life’s work on children’s cognitive development and was best known for his contributions in the areas of curiculum theory and the process of education. By the 1960s, his theory shifted to include the influence of the environment and experience in learning. Influenced by Jean Piaget (1896-1980) and Lev Vygotsky (1896-1934), Bruner championed the idea of spiral curriculum and learning readiness. He believed that intellect grew in stages and that children develop a deeper understanding if learning is delivered in a manner that becomes progressively more complex.”

Daron Hagen Takes “Flight” with Flight Music by Jay B. Aiken

“Daron Aric Hagen (b. 1961) is an American composer, conductor, pianist, educator, librettist, and stage director of contemporary classical music and opera… A search of the Choral Journal index shows no mention of Daron Hagen. This article is an attempt to allow readers to become more familiar with this composer/conductor, specifically his 2005 work Flight Music, which is an extended, sophisticated piece for women’s voices.”

Music Advocacy Challenges and Opportunities by Lynn Brinckmeyer

Fostering Inclusion: Unpacking Choral Dress Codes by Gayla Blaisdell

“As music educators, most of us have attended workshops on inclusivity and diversity training. We might even sit at those meetings rolling our eyes while thinking, ‘This doesn’t apply to me. I’m inclusive. I don’t discriminate based on gender or sexual orientation, and I know how to recognize sexual discrimination when I see it in my classroom or in my working environment.’ And hopefully, we are correct in our confidence… This article will uncover the ways that ensemble dress codes and uniform requirements perpetuate gender insensitivity and will suggest new strategies to promote inclusion for all within the ensemble.”

Sing, Dance, and Celebrate: Choral Music of Diverse World Traditions by Jose Rivera
