Tonight I watched and listened as choral directors, each members and leaders within ACDA, led choirs to sing in remembrance of those that have lost their lives in the recent senseless acts of violence in the US. I remain stunned, but somehow grateful, that there are choral directors and choirs available to sing and to bring comfort, strength, peace, hope, and serenity in these unsettling times. Once again, it is the lyrics freighted to us by choirs that offer personal solace. In the inspired words of Jane Griner, with Daniel E Gawthrop’s music, I find balm:
In my heart’s sequestered chambers lie truths stripped of poets’ gloss
Words alone are vain and vacant, and my heart is mute
In response to aching silence, memory summons half-heard voices
And my soul finds primal eloquence, and wraps me in song
(From the choral work Sing Me to Heaven)
Please watch and listen to Classical Minnesota Radio and my friends and colleagues Brian, Tesfa Wondemagegnehu and Phillip Shoultz in this moment of solace:
