COMPOSITION SPOTLIGHT ~ by Jack Senzig

(Each week we look at one or two of the best choral works posted in the Composition Showcase here on ChoralNet.  This is where we store a treasure trove of works that your choirs will love to sing and your audiences will love to hear.)

Evening Star by Michał Ziółkowski SATB divis a cappella  (click here for PDF and here for AUDIO)

Level: High School or Higher
Uses: General Concert, Masterworks
Program Themes: Cold, Space, The Moon, Stars, Poe
This Piece Would Program Well With: O Magnum Mysterium  by Morten Lauridsen available at Sheet Music Plus and JWPepper

Wow.  Just wow.

Christmas has come early this year for me.   Santa left me a gift in my e-mail stocking that I just have to share.  It was a link to the most beautiful piece of music I have heard this year!   Set to a beautiful and surprisingly uplifting poem by Edgar Allen Poe, Evening Star will send chills down your spine, goose bumps up your arms and an arrow through your heart.  It is approachable by any SATB chorus that can handle a little divisi.  This could be the piece that drives your members to stretch  their ability to attain it’s grasp or be a treat to an already highly skilled chorus.

Michał Ziółkowski  is a college student at The Academy of Music in Wrocław. Look for more from this budding star!

You are right.  Wow.   I listened twice then got more curious and did some spelunking in the caverns of the internet.  The choir is beautiful as well – it is the Rondo Voice Ensemble conducted by Malgorzata Podzielny at the Academy of Music in Wrocław.

Thanks so much, Jack.  Well worth listening to.
