Today for our conducting study, let’s focus on the face.
Generally, how do people react when you scowl at them? Now take the opposite view: when you smile as someone, isn’t that smile returned? (try it sometime) The giggles of children usually make those hearing their little peals of joy laugh too.
So doesn’t it stand to reason that as visual communicators, we should consider the emotions on our face while we are conducting? We have probably all had a teacher or conductor whose facial expression was completely and unwaveringly neutral. Were they motivational? Or did their apparent detachment inspire you to consider a gym class rather than choir?
The conductor in this short excerpt from a recent ACDA divisional conference suffers from no such difficulty. Our colleague is clearly having a blast leading the choir, and the excitement he registers on his joyful face is unmistakable.
What do YOU communicate facially?
