(From the Choral Journal article Preparation of the College Vocal Student, by Helen Hosmer.)
My topic is The Preparation of the College Vocal Student. Following are the blueprint requests to be covered. I list them all to show how expansive our topic is and what an involvement is present. And it is really essential to consider all these points in the sum total.
I. The High School Student Entering College
1. Strengths and weaknesses the college teacher encounters in students from the high schools entering college in vocal music.
2. Bridge between high school and college.
3. Continuation of work previously done in high school.
II. Preparation
1. The making of a good vocal teacher; here is a quotation from Homer Mowe. With this I am heartily in accord and will refer to this later. “The way to train teachers is to make singers out
of them.”
2. Discuss the two types of college music programs:
a. State Colleges concerned with Teacher Training
b. “College of Music” within the university structure where BM, MM, and DMA degrees are given.
III. Requirements
1 . To teach in the fields of music education.
2. To be prepared for further endeavor toward professional goals.
IV. Program of Study
1. Curriculum for voice majors
a. Musicianship courses theory. harmony. Appreciation and music literature. vocal lit. solo
and choral. adequate preparation on the piano. Conducting
b. Languages. etc.
V. Qualifications
1. What are the unique personal qualifications of a student who is to excel as a music teacher. choral conductor, teacher of voice, performer? Many teachers in the field do not have the dynamic and necessary personal qualifications of a good vocal teacher.
2. What is being done in the colleges to prepare students in the specific areas of voice instruction and/or vocal performance?
3. What is being done to prepare teachers to teach voice in the elementary schools. secondary schools. and colleges?
4. What emphasis is given to the child voice and its proper training? Music teachers in all levels. particularly elementary and junior high schools are not adequately prepared to teach singing, handle school choirs. choruses. etc. Many teachers do not know the human vocal instrument voice.
