The Pope may be one of the most celebrated visitors Cuba has welcomed this spring, but next month, the American Choral Directors Association will be there, joining with choral conductors and composers of Cuba for the ACDA initiated US/Cuba Choral Summit in Havanna.
This event grew out of ACDA’s International Conductor Exchange Program (ICEP) which resulted in the attendance by five Cuban conductors at ACDA's Division Conferences earlier this year. The Cuban guests were conductors Carmen Collado López, director Coro Polifónico de La Habana; Maria Felicia Pérez Arroyo, director Coro Exaudi; Leonor Suárez Dulzaides, director Camerata vocale Sine nomine ; José Antonio Méndez Valencia, director Coro de cámara de Matanzas; and Corina Campos Morales, director Coro Vocal Leo. From May 26-June 1, over 50 ACDA members will travel to Havanna, Cuba, to join in a conference with the above conductors and additional Cuban conductors, their choirs, and resident Cuban choral composers, for performances and workshops hosted by our Cuban colleagues.
The re-emergence of ACDA’s International Conductor Exchange Program is a result of the work of ACDA Vice-President Jerry McCoy, and program director Jim Feiszli. This work continues into the coming years with new country partners and participants. ACDA continues its commitment to be full partners in world choral initiatives, and this summer, this initiative moves into full gear.
