Have you ever considered implementing an instrumental-style chair test system in your choral ensemble? In Episode 57 of ChoralEd, Travis Rogers shares a method for encouraging constructive competition through an approach he calls the challenge system.
Similar to a chair test approach found in an orchestra or band, Rogers’ method invites students to challenge their peers for placement on the risers. Using a standing formation where the strongest and most accurate singers are placed behind (or on a higher row than) the less accurate singers, ensemble members challenge each other in a head-to-head competition for riser placement.
While implementing this system can significantly boost student motivation and practice habits, directors should weigh these benefits against potential drawbacks, such as student discouragement or a hesitation to challenge peers.
