I have to admit, as much as I much prefer to hear it sung in French, and being no fan of Rutter’s work, this IS a splendid rendition of “Minuit Chrétien.” There was, though, a momentary giggle: the last frames of the organist “letting ‘er rip” and then the “mysterious third hand” with the “fickle finger of fate” hitting the different settings just got me to thinking how even the most glorious bits of our business can be so ridiculous-seeming if anyone ever saw it happening – which is why lofts and places which the congregation can’t really see what’s happening is probably the best thing for our self-respect!
