An historic opportunity has become available to American Choral Directors Association members and selected choral ensembles. After fifty years of separation between Cuba and the United States – a period during which both countries have developed a thriving choral tradition – ACDA, through the auspices of its International Choral Exchange Program, has established the first-ever U.S./Cuba Choral Summit.
Cuban choirs have been lauded around the world for their musicianship and excellence, winning prestigious competitions and awards. Yet, for the most part, U.S. choral musicians have been denied the chance to hear or interact with these fine groups as the politics between our two nations created a divide.
Working with Music for Peace International, a non-profit arm of Harmony International whose main purpose has been humanitarian contact with Cuba, ACDA has developed a week-long symposium, detailed here. From May 27 through June 1, 2012, ACDA members and choral ensembles are be invited to come to Cuba to meet and exchange music and traditions with Cuban choral conductors and composers. Seven outstanding choral directors from every division of ACDA have been selected to represent the U.S. in May. Cuban directors will be coming to the United States to spend time within each division and at each division conference throughout February and March. Among these seven Cuban conductors are world-renowned conductors such as Digna Guerra and Maria Felicia Perez.
At this time, we are soliciting choirs to represent the United States at this Choral Summit in May 2012. Individual ACDA members are invited to attend as well. Interested parties should contact me at: https://choralnet.org/view/user/28
