Explaining a nonprofit choir

December 4, 2010 by Allen H Simon Leave a Comment

This video is created by a free do-it-yourself video creation system called xtranormal, which creates an animated video like this using stock characters, based just on a text script. I've seen much better-done ones than this example, with more interesting backgrounds, camera angles, and so on, but I'm blown away by the power of this software to autonomously create 3-D animation. The question I always come away with, though, is why this 21st-century video technology is accompanied by a speech synthesis system that sounds like 1978.

There have been quite a few of these videos circulating the internet recently.  I’m fast becoming a fan do to the humor.  However, what’s beginning to strike me is how lousy we really are about “selling” our passion.  It seems the whole “the soul is as important as the stomach” argument doesn’t get us very far.  But, I’m not nearly smart enough to know where to go from there.

Cute, but….what’s disturbing about this little show is what it says about the audience we’re trying to get.  I can’t recall when I’ve heard more circular reasoning and a “deaf” ear on the part of the character on the right, and an all-too-patient advocate on the left.  I suppose the point is to show us musicians that we’re not likely to get a lot of help from “characters” like this, and perhaps the message beyond it is “why try?” – but this is isn’t the least bit encouraging.  I also suspect that the point of the little film wasn’t what Allen was promoting, but the technical ability to do this sort of messaging in a “cute” and thus, acceptable, format; but still, I’m hearing the message and it don’t make me feel good….!!!!
