IPA Now

September 29, 2010 by philip copeland Leave a Comment

For those who have never heard of the program, IPA Now is a brilliant program that automatically transcribes several languages (Latin, French, German, Italian) into IPA Symbols.

For one week, Kelly Turner (owner of IPA Now!) has agreed to give ChoralNet members the program for a discounted price of $17.99.

Here is the special link for the discount.

Just in case you were wondering – this was my idea, not Kelly’s!  I think it is such a valuable program that I wanted to feature it to the entire ChoralNet audience.

Check out the program – you will be glad you did.

The program is not available for the MAC . . . so I use it on my PC and save it as a PDF.

I find this manner of  instant gratification “technology” disturbing.  Basic research skills, such as consulting foreign language dictionaries, are germane to the profession of choral conducting.  Commonplace shortcuts undermine the pursuit of artistic excellence.

Buyer beware indeed.   Assuming in the first place that one wished to learn Italian via IPA, wouldn’t it be helpful to distinguish rolled from flipped r’s?  Even a machine should be able to work out those rules.

Dr. Lloyd, there are errors on the Bach sample as well,
    mostly incorrect vowels.

Note that I discovered the following: to get the reduced price you click on the Pay Now at the bottom of the page, not the Pay Now button at the left side-bar. It seems great but posting online (such as into this text box), the character sets for web display seem limited and don’t transcribe correctly. However, if you paste the generated text into a Word document or the like, it’s exact.

Buyer beware – Take a look at the sample ipa for the Brahms requiem – there are multiple errors according to standard hoch Deutsch rules in just the first few lines of text.

Are there plans to release a MAC version?
