Pronounce any word: Forvo is amazing

August 24, 2010 by philip copeland Leave a Comment

My new graduate student Peter Haley keeps pushing new sites my way.  First it was the “Sing and Compose” pen and now it is Forvo.

Forvo describes themselves as the “largest pronunciation guide in the world.”

From their website:
Ever wondered how a word is pronounced? Ask for that word or name, and another user will pronounce it for you. You can also help others by recording your pronunciations in your own language.
Forvo is an online service that claims to have 741,998 words, 659,314 pronunciations, and 258 languages represented.

Check it out and see what you think.

Replies vary in quality, volume and dialect depending on who records the word.  I checked out some Russian words and it was hard to understand some words due to quality of recording.  Recordings can be rated by anyone listening to the word.  It is a kind of wikipedia for pronunciation.  There is always the possibility that someone says it incorrectly. Interesting – could be helpful at times but it would be good to double check with other sources for work where accuracy is critical.
