Philadelphia based composer, Melissa Dunphy, will be a focus of attention in St. Louis this weekend. On Sunday, February 15 at 3 pm, two local ensembles will be performing her work in different concerts and at different venues. The Saint Louis Chamber Chorus premieres their latest collaboration with her – “Suite Justice” – at Salem United Methodist Church in Ladue. Melissa will attend this world premiere, so concertgoers will be able to greet the composer in person. Other selections in the justice-themed program include motets by Palestrina and Alessandro Scarlatti, politically charged declarations from William Schuman, Ulysses S. Kay, and Eriks Esenvalds, and rarely heard choruses by Tchaikovsky and James MacMillan.
Also on Sunday, the Saint Louis Women’s Chorale will present Melissa’s dramatic piece, “Jack and the Beanstalk.” Unfortunately, Melissa cannot clone herself, so she will miss this performance even though it promises to be very entertaining.
