Jouyssance Early Music Ensemble, conducted by Dr. Nicole Baker, will present MadriGALS, a concert of music by women from the 9th through late 17th centuries. The venerable ensemble, founded as the Neo-Renaissance Singers in 1962, will be joined by the viols of L.A. Camerata, Dr, Marylin Winkle, Artistic Director.
Composers include Sor Juana Inéz de la Cruz of Mexico, the Italians Sulpitia Cesis, Chiara Margarita Cozzolani, Maddalena Casulana, Isabella Leonarda and Rafella Aleotti, and the Byzantine Kassia. The program will also feature an excerpt from the first surviving opera by a woman, Francesca Caccini’s La liberazione di Ruggiero.
