God Has Work for Us to Do

January 25, 2023 by David McConnell Leave a Comment

Saturday, February 11, 2023, Vox Philia and Berks Sinfonietta come together for a musical tribute to Black History Month. They are joined by two regional collegiate choirs: the Albright Chamber Ensemble and the Lincoln University Concert Choir.

Audiences will hear an exciting evening of orchestral and choral music by black and African American composers, including Florence Price, Ysaye M. Barnwell, William Grant Still, Josephine Poelinitz, and many others.

“Vox Philia and Berks Sinfonietta perform music that is as diverse and representative as the community we serve,” stated Dr. David McConnell, Artistic Director. “We are thrilled that, for the fifth consecutive year, local audiences can celebrate Black History Month, hearing some well established works, as well as works that need to be heard and should be part of the regular orchestral and choral repertoire.”

Many selections highlight the black experience in America. The Albright Chamber Ensemble will perform Spiritual Quodlibets by Dr. Ysaye M. Barnwell. “Barnwell includes five quodlibets, a form of music with melodies in counterpoint, using the melodies of several spirituals,” stated Dr. Derrick Thompson, conductor. “We intend to take the audience on a musical journey of the spirituals that brought many African Americans through rough times.”

Together, the ensembles also explore traditions that originated from the musical contributions of African Americans. “The Lincoln University Concert Choir will be presenting a piece that has quickly become a favorite, I Sing Because I’m Happy,” said Victoria Pitre, conductor. “Composer Rollo Dilworth is renowned for his contributions to the Gospel literature. Audience members will note his signature jazz piano accompaniment that adds richness to the harmony of the vocalists.”

The performance takes place on Saturday, February 11, 2023, at 7:30 pm at Immanuel United Church of Christ, 99 S. Waverly Street, Shillington, PA 19607. Admission to the live performance is $15/Adult & $5/Students. Tickets are available at the door and online at https://www.tickettailor.com/events/voxphilia/829810.
