Choir directors and your voice teachers,
You might already be aware of Source Song Festival, an art song festival held each August at Westminster Presbyterian in downtown Minneapolis, even though your attendance in previous years may have been prevented due to the ACDA convention. We hope you’ll be interested in attending this year, and we’d like to specifically invite you to a few events that are education-focused–including solo ensemble competition repertoire and artistry-building:
Tuesday, August 8 – 6 – 9 pm, Warren Jones Masterclass – $15 admission
Piano and vocal duos will sing pieces for master clinician and song interpreter Warren Jones. This event is truly a highlight of the festival, bringing the audience into the detailed nuance and practice of art song. Brush up your coaching skills, and interact with Warren and MNDuo participants to inspire your students to be the best artists they can be.
Friday, August 11 – 10 – 11 am – FREE – Mindfulness movement and breathing for performers with Krista Costin Set the outside distractions aside and join Krista Costin for mindful breathing exercises and meditative tools to help bring intentional focus into any music-making situation.
Friday, August 11 – 12 pm – 2 pm – FREE – Arlene Shrut and Stephen Swanson – How to Coach/How to Masterclass There’s a difference between coaching, a voice lesson, and a masterclass. These coaches (with previous affiliations at Juilliard and currently at the University of Iowa) have over 100 years of combined experience coaching a wide variety of styles and voices. You will be inspired.
Friday, August 11 – 2:30 – 4:30 p.m. – FREE – Dr. Juan Carlos Mendoza – Survey of Latin American Art Song Want to expand your knowledge of Spanish-language song? Dr. Juan Carlos Mendoza specializes in Spanish language art song, and will give you more options for your students. You may also discover new-to-you composers with accessible choral music to connect with the growing number of native Spanish-speaking students in your choirs.
Our education initiative can grow through your choral programs, and we’re excited to consider how else we can support this study of storytelling and authenticity through song. Additionally, please feel free to share this with any private voice teachers in your studios, and always consider your aspiring career musicians.
