On Sunday December 14 2025 at 4pm, the Brattleboro Camerata (https://bmcvt.org/brattleboro-camerata/) presents “Ich steh hier und Singe: Music of Hassler and Bach,” featuring Hans Leo Hassler’s motet “Dixit Maria” and imitation mass “Missa super Dixit Maria,” followed by Johann Sebastian Bach’s motet “Jesu, meine Freude” BWV 227.
“Ich steh hier und Singe” is concert exploring the musical connections between Hassler, who was one of the originators of German Baroque style, and Bach, who was arguably its pinnacle and last great practitioner. Both of the pieces on the program show their composers engaging in a kind of musical borrowing appropriate to their time, albeit with Hassler looking forward and Bach looking back. They almost meet in the middle, with Hassler pushing the Renaissance tradition into a more dramatic and tempestuous Baroque future, and Bach imbuing his high Baroque drama with a contrapuntal rigor rooted in Renaissance practice.
