For the first time in St. Louis there will be presented “A Garland for the Queen,” the cycle of modern madrigals written to celebrate the Coronation of Elizabeth II in 1953. The ten collaborations between poets and composers represented a high watermark of choral writing at the time, but their technical challenges have subsequently dissuaded most choirs from presenting the cycle in its entirety. However, on Sunday, April 19, the Saint Louis Chamber Chorus, itself celebrating its 70th anniversary, will perform this suite compiled in honor of the longest serving British monarch – she reigned for seventy years. Christ Church Episcopal Cathedral, with its Gothic architecture and English heritage, provides the ideal venue for a program that also features ‘royal’ works by William Byrd, Orlando Gibbons and Vincent Chinemelu. Tickets for the 3 pm performance are now on sale, and may be obtained through the choir’s website or at the door.
