8/16, Brahms Ein Deutsches Requiem

The San Francisco Choral Society returns to Davies Symphony Hall for its biggest event of the year, performing Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem. Now in its fourth year, SF Choral’s 2025 Summer Festival Chorus program brings experienced singers from across the country for a full week of rehearsals with SF Choral’s Resident Chorus, culminating in the performance at Davies. Artistic Director Robert Geary, will lead the combined forces of more than 150 voices and the California Chamber Symphony, as well as debut guest artists Cara Gabrielson (soprano) and Andrew Pardini (baritone).

 

Widely regarded as one of the crowning achievements of the choral canon, Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem is a human meditation on grief, comfort, and hope. Rather than following the traditional Latin Mass for the dead, Brahms chose texts from the German Luther Bible to craft a universal message of consolation for the living. SF Choral returns to this beloved masterwork for the first time in over a decade.

 

As part of SF Choral’s Summer Festival Chorus program, guest choral singers from outside the Bay Area were invited to audition to participate with the SF Choral in-person Resident Chorus. Livestreamed rehearsals began in May, with 15 guest participants joining the Resident Chorus in-person in San Francisco for a full week of rehearsals that will culminate in the final performance at Davies Symphony Hall. Participants in this year’s program are coming from New York, Maryland, Georgia and across California. This year marks the fourth annual Summer Festival Chorus and builds on SF Choral’s existing year-round program that provides singers with the opportunity to perform major choral works with professional orchestras and soloists as well as classes and workshops. SF Choral also sponsors a student scholarship program that invites local high school and college students to participate in the rehearsal process and performance experience.
