Score Cover Thee We Adore CORO One such piece is “Thee We Adore,” by Philip Moody, (SSSAAA/TTBB, unaccompanied). Although it’s set for many divided voices, it’s actually quite accessible. Similar to Franz Biebl’s “Ave Maria,” Moody expands on a traditional plainchant to create a large-scale, antiphonal anthem. The voicing isn’t as intimidating as it appears. There is flexibility in how a conductor can approach the many voice parts, and the homophonic textures and diatonic harmonies make it easy to teach. Score Cover Always Singing Dale WarlandOne of Graphite’s best-selling pieces is Dale Warland’s “Always Singing,” (SATB divisi, unaccompanied—the choral voices divide up to SSAATTBB). This work is lovely, including rich, warm harmonies. A master choral conductor, Warland knows how to spell chords that bring out maximum color and expression in the voices. Her first forays into composition were via songwriting, and this is very evident in her work. The majority of her compositional output is for voice: solo, chamber and choral. In 2012 she collaborated with choreographer Penelope Freeh to create “Slippery Fish,” a quartet for 2 dancers, soprano and viola, and the piece was reviewed as “completely original in all respects.” (Star Tribune, Minneapolis/St. Paul). Paul John RudoiDeemed “indisputably unique, confident, and innovative” through the American Prize, Paul John Rudoi’s award-winning compositions have been commissioned and performed by various ensembles and artists throughout North America and Europe. Paul is also a fierce advocate for new music trends, resources, and issues. His most recent project Consortio is designed to help composers, conductors, and ensembles find common themes and interests for consortium-based commissioning while offering tools and services to make commissioning music more readily accessible and feasible. Takach has risen fast in the concert world. Applauded for his melodic lines and rich, intriguing harmonies, Takach has received commissions from various organizations including the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, St. Olaf Band, Cantus, Pavia Winds, Lorelei Ensemble, VocalEssence, the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center, The Rose Ensemble, and numerous high school and university choirs. Takach has received grants from the American Composers Forum, Meet the Composer, Minnesota State Arts Board, Metropolitan Regional Arts Council, and ASCAP. Our Contributing Editor Contributing Editor Jonathan CampbellJonathan Campbell received his B.A. from Luther College in 1998, a Master of Sacred Music degree from Luther Seminary, St. Paul, Minnesota in 2002, and a Doctor of Musical Arts in choral conducting in 2015 at North Dakota State University. As a composer, Jon has received numerous awards and commissions, including a Faith Partner’s Residency through the American Composer’s Forum, as well as first place in the Morningstar College Choral Composition Festival. From 2004-2012, Jon conducted the Honors Choirs of Southeast Minnesota Chorale and in the spring of 2011, served as interim director of choral activities at Winona State University. At Augsburg University, Minneapolis, MN he recently served as faculty conductor of the Cedar Singers male chorus and the Masterworks Chorale. Jon is founder and was artistic director of the Minnesota Renaissance Choir, and is currently Director of Music and Fine Arts at Claremont United Church of Christ and Lecturer in Music at Pomona College, both in Claremont, CA.
