Colby College – Walkers with the Dawn by Francine Trester – Ensemble Form
On April 7, 2018, Colby College’s Chorale and the Colby-Kennebec Choral Society will present a mini-masterwork by Berklee College of Music Professor of Composition, Francine Trester, entitled “Walkers with the Dawn,” with music set to the poetry of Langston Hughes. We are looking for music teachers and their students, as well as community members from across the Kennebec Valley and throughout the state of Maine to join us for the singing of this most extraordinary work. Soloists include Dana Whiteside, baritone, Fatimah Ali ’19, narrator, and Richard Dostie, piano.
Also featured on this concert are movement from Bob Chilcott’s “Aesop’s Fables,” Randall Thompson’s “The Last Words of David,” Emma Lou Diemer’s “3 Madrigals,” and Samuel Barber’s “Let Down the Bars, O Death.” Original poetry will sew the pieces together, and opening the concert will be Ralph Vaughan Williams’s “Songs of Travel” performed by graduating Colby College senior Liam Butchart ’18, with Anna Beth Rynders at the piano. While you would only be expected to sing on Francine’s piece, if you’d like to join us for any other pieces, we’re happy to have you as well!
