Ember is an 8-part SATB ensemble for experienced singers who can read music. The ensemble stands out for its programming, which focuses on telling a meaningful story over the course of a full concert season. Artistic Director Deborah Simpkin King is well known for her new music advocacy and extensive collaboration with living composers.
Ember holds auditions at the beginning of each concert cycle. Interested singers should reach out to us online at EmberEnsemble.org/auditions, via e-mail at or by phone at 888-407-6002 x3. We will follow up with an introductory call, and work with you to find a time to meet with our Artistic Director. While the performance standard for membership is high, what knits Ember together is the experience of music as a living, breathing thing, connected to our daily lives, and filled with meaning. The Ember Family always welcomes new members who share this passion for storytelling through song.
Ember has moved its Tuesday-evening rehearsal location to the Opera America building, 330 7th Avenue (2-1/2 blocks south of Penn Station) effective as of March 2019. Ember is unusual in its wide radius from which its singers hail — and equally from NY and NJ. The new location, near Penn Station, was selected for its accessibility to singers from both states.
Auditions are held at Opera America and consist of vocalizing, singing a prepared aria, art song or show tune, and sight reading. Ember singers read music, and work with heightened ensemble discipline and flexibility to maximize expressive potential. Clear tone and excellent intonation are necessary for a successful audition.
Ember is a mix of professional and experienced avocational singers, and we welcome auditions from both. Summer auditions are currently scheduled for Wednesday, July 31st, and Tuesday, September 3rd. We look forward to meeting you!
