Wyandot’s Realm (Huron Carol) – by Andrew Balfour

October 25, 2024 by Larry Nickel Leave a Comment

The “Huron Carol” is Canada’s oldest Christmas song, written probably in 1642 by Jean de Brébeuf, a Jesuit missionary at Sainte-Marie among the Huron Tribe in Canada. Brébeuf wrote the lyrics in the native language of the Huron/Wyandat people; the song’s original Huron title is “Jesous Ahatonhia” (“Jesus, he is born”). The beloved carol has become somewhat controversial. This might be the first rendition by an Indigenous composer, Andrew Balfour.
