World Choir Games: Singing janitor going for clean sweep

July 6, 2012 by Richard Allen Roe Leave a Comment

By Cliff Radel

CINCINNATI — He keeps time with a short-handled broom and a long-handled dustpan.  Sweep, sweep. The broom does its work.  Tap, tap. The dust pan pats the restroom’s floor.  The song begins.  Ronald Greene, the singing janitor, slowly rolls out the words to an old gospel hymn.

“There’s a leak in this old building and my soul got to move.”

His booming, barrel-chested voice rumbles from the restroom outside Ballroom D of the Duke Energy Center. He gestures with his blue-gloved hands. He performs for an audience of none.  Singers from the 2012 World Choir Games scurry down the hallway. No one turns to listen. They’ve heard this before. They figure it’s just one of their own warming up.
