was a native of Jamaica, New York. He was organist of Calvary Episcpal Church and then St.

how a Rose e’er blooming”. Handel’s “Let thy hand be strengthened” is one
of four coronation anthems which he wrote. Joao Lourenco Rebelo (1610–1665)
was a friend of King John IV of Portugal.

One translation of the German title for this week’s cantata is “A horrible end
will carry you off”. Otherwise it is a delightful work which was written for the

Sir John Tavener (1944-2013) wrote music which was known to lovers of
classical and sacred choral music for many years before his “Song of Athene”
was heard by a world-wide audience at Princess Diana’s funeral in September 1997.
