Thomas Tomkins (1572-1656) was born in St. David’s, Wales.
Felix Mendelssohn is generally better known for his orchestral music than
for his choral music. However, he wrote hundreds of sacred pieces of which
“Jesu meine freude” is typical. We will hear two compositions by Bruckner this
morning. “Virga Jesse Floruit” which dates from 1885 shows the composer’s
understanding of the older styles of writing, the stile antico of the renaissance era.

J.S. Bach: Cantata 26, “Ach wie fluchtig, ach wie nichtig”

J.S. Bach: Cantata 26, “Ach wie fluchtig, ach wie nichtig”
Bach Collegium Japan, Masaaki Suzuki
Yukari Nonoshita, soprano; Robin Blaze, countertenor;
Makoto Sakurada, tenor; Peter Kooy, bass-baritone
The German translates as “Ah, how fleeting, ah, how empty”. The cantata
opens with one of those energetic sinfonias in which the chorale tune is decorated
with marvellous flourishes by the strings, hautbois and chorus.

Alessandro Scarlatti (1660-1725) is known more for his operas than his sacred music.
In fact one commentator referred to Scarlatti’s sacred music as ‘comparatively unimportant’.
I believe that his setting of ‘Salve Regina’ refutes that general statement.

From a December 1961 BBC radio broadcast this recording of Bruckner’s Te Deum captures the artistry
and magic of some great musicians.

It is interesting to compare Schutz’ treatment of the St. Matthew Passion with Johann Sebastian Bach’s
monumental work. Approximately one hundred years separate the two German musicians.
