Music in My Mother’s House brings back cherished memories of my grandparents
playing the piano and saxophone of a Sunday evening. Salve Regina dates from
Handel’s time in Italy and was first performed in 1707 in the Marchese di Cerveteri’s
private chapel. Charles Gounod (1818-1893) wrote over twelve operas and six oratorios.
But like Johann Pachelbel who is remembered solely for his Canon in D, Gounod’s reputation rests on an
Ave Maria which he wrote based on a prelude of Johann Sebastian Bach.
