The libretto for this work includes text from the liturgy of the Roman Mass
as well as additional texts by Stephen Schwartz and Leonard Bernstein. Now,
if you are expecting a traditional mass setting, Bernstein’s Mass is not that at all.
This is a grand composition well informed by the maestro’s fertile imagination and
sure touch. Marin Alsop captures the verve and tenderness of Bernstein’s score in
this stunning recording released in 2009.
