Joseph Noyon (1888-1962) was a French organist and composer. Among the many
positions which he held during his lifetime was that of director of the choirs of French
Radio. Stanford composed his popular Easter anthem in 1910. The 11th century religious,
Saint Fulbert of Chartres, wrote the text. Ralph Vaughan Williams wrote his Festival Te
Deum for the coronation in 1937.

The tune for This Joyful Eastertide dates from 1685. About 100 years earlier William Byrd
wrote his six part motet Haec Dies which translates as “this great day.” American composer
Horatio Parker (1863-1919) was taught by George Whitefield Chadwick and himself taught
Charles Ives and Roger Sessions.

in Salzburg. English organist and composer Dr. Francis Jackson (1917-) was

What we know as the Easter Oratorio began as a cantata for Easter Day
1725. Bach gave it the title Easter Oratorio when he revised the work in
1735. He further revised the oratorio in 1740. This is the version on our
playlist.
