SAN JOSE, California – April 13, 2017. Composed in 1968, Stimmung for voices and microphones was commissioned by the City of Cologne for the Collegium Vocale Kӧln, who so far are one of the few groups to perform this work in Bay area (in 1974), along with the California EAR Unit (in 1980s). It is a tonal, yet also a serial composition, and the first major Western composition to be based entirely on the production of vocal harmonics. Stimmung became very influential with many composers particularly of the spectral school of contemporary composition.
As the timing of its composition approximates San Francisco’s “Summer of Love”, Stimmung aligns itself with its ideals of universal love, religious unity, and meditation. It is accomplished through the deeply meditative nature of the work as well as the use of a variety of Magic Names that come from many different world religion traditions.
Working in consultation with the original Collegium Vocale Kӧln singers, Voices of Silicon Valley have developed a new approach to Stimmung which allows for participation of more than 6 singers, thus taking advantage of the creative freedom offered by the composer. All the German performance markings from the Paris version of Stimmung have been meticulously translated into English for these performances, as to this day no score with performance markings translated into English has been published.
VOSV is working with a team of sound engineers from Stanford University’s Center of Computer Research for Music and Acoustics (CCRMA) who will be leading the technical aspect of these performances. We’re also partnering with the Cultural Affairs Department of the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany in San Francisco to reach out to the German community of the Bay area regarding these performances.
In the first half of the program VOSV will present Missa Luba, a 15-minute piece that combines traditional Mass text with African rhythms and drums, as well as Kontakion by our Artistic Director Cyril Deaconoff which combines Eastern Orthodox melodies with Cuban jazz rhythms.
