DAPHNE, Ala.—Shoppers at the Walmart were surprised Saturday
at 1 p.m. by approximately 100 voices of a “flash mob” choral group
belting out the hymn “Hallelujah Chorus” by Handel Messiah.

Shoppers stopped everything they were doing and eyes were
looking in every direction.
Checkout lines were filled one minute and vacant the next. For a
brief time everyone seemed mesmerized, stopped what they were doing
and began to close in around the singers to enjoy the combination
of voices lifted to the rafters.
Camera phones were raised above the crowd to get photos of the
event. Surprised faces broke into smiles as customers began to
realize what was happening. Many had seen “flash mobs” on YouTube,
but probably never expected to encounter one. The singing ended
with a resounding crescendo of arms raised and shouts of
joy.
