It’s a rarity to hear “Brahms’ Requiem” for four-hand piano performed, but the talents of the choral group “Seraphic Fire” and students in the Professional Choral Institute at the University of South Florida pulled it off.
For their efforts on the challenging classical piece, the group has been rewarded with a nomination for a “Best Choral Performance” Grammy Award.
“We knew when the singers arrived on campus, we had a special group of musicians,” said Assistant Professor of Voice Brad Diamond.
The first week of the project, the students prepared for Seraphic Fire to arrive on campus. The second week, the group spent hours rehearsing and recording with some of the best voices in classical music.
Members of the choral group explained how and why the group became worth of a Grammy nomination:
“I was able to stand next to them and sing,” said Assistant Choral Master Brett Karlin. “It was extraordinary.”
“I auditioned on the off chance that I would have the opportunity to sing with these amazing professionals, and I got in,” graduate student Miriam Osman said. “It was great.”
