Tulsa Children’s Chorus Selected as Oklahoma All-State Honor Group

Each January, the Oklahoma Music Educators Association (OMEA) holds its annual conference for music educators. While in attendance, teachers and students attend sessions led by the nation’s top clinicians and enjoy concerts comprising the talents of the state’s top performing students, ranging from elementary through university-level. The Tulsa Children’s Chorus was selected amongst applicants from across the state to be a performing Honor Group for the 2016 convention. A free concert for the public will take place at Holy Family Cathedral in Downtown Tulsa on January 21st at 4:30pm.

 

According to Tulsa Children’s Chorus Artistic Director, Ashlee Elmore, being selected is one of the highest honors a choir can receive. “All choirs in the state of Oklahoma are invited to submit audio recordings to the panel of judges, at the conclusion of each year, in hopes of being selected as an OMEA Honor Group for the upcoming year’s annual convention. The groups that are selected are recognized as the top choirs in the state and go on to perform an Honor Group Concert at the convention,” said Elmore.

 

“When I attended my first OMEA conference as an All-State choir member in 1995 and saw all of the Honor Groups performing, I hoped, one day, I would get to direct one of my very own choirs at the convention. When I returned as an educator, starting in 2000, I then truly saw it was one of the highest accolades a choir could receive, “ said Elmore. “These are the choirs in the state that have a choral sound and tradition that educators hope to emulate. It is truly the arriving point for a choir. The Tulsa Children’s Chorus could not be happier to receive the honor of performing for beloved area music educators in its very own city.”

 

Beginning its 25th Anniversary Season this month, Tulsa Children’s Chorus has welcomed nearly 30 new singers and has begun preparations for a busy season. In addition, our organization has also begun planning for its 25th Anniversary celebrations scheduled in June of 2016. To build on last year’s achievements of singing for nearly 30,000 people around the state, welcoming the world-renowned African Children’s Choir for a collaborative performance and joining the St. Louis Children’s Choirs in song during our spring tour, we will continue our mission of providing Tulsa-area children with the highest choral music education and best performance opportunities possible.
