A newly published work from A Tempo: “Titanic Requiem” commemorates the sinking of the Titanic exactly 99 years ago today. It anticipates memorial celebrations around the world a year from now, April 15, 2012. This work was written on commission by Project Renaissance (Ormstown, Quebec) in 1992, on the occasion of the 80th. anniversary of the sinking. The text is the traditional Requiem aeternam combined with a tender eulogy to the fated Titanic and its passengers by organologist and Titanic buff Wolfgang Kater. A warning for ‘today’…
The 21-minute Titanic Requiem has been performed several times since, the most noteworthy being that in St. John’s Newfoundland, Canada, in the Basilica Cathedral in the graveyard of which are buried many of the 1517 people who drowned that terrible and terrifying early morning in 1912 The choir, Quintessential – in period dress – was under the direction of Susan Quinn. Titanic Requiem is scored for SATB, soprano soloist, string quartet, solo cello and piano- the very instruments performing on the Titania’s maiden and only voyage.
