Following an extensive search, San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus
has announced that effective January 1, 2011, the internationally
renowned and respected choral guru, Dr. Timothy Seelig, will take
the podium as its next Artistic Director and Conductor.
Vance George, conductor Emeritus of the San Francisco Symphony
Chorus, says: “Tim is a truly gifted conductor. Audiences can
expect great things and his contribution to the cultural life of
our city is keenly anticipated.”
Touched by the accolade, Seelig says: “The Chorus has been a
source of inspiration for me personally and professionally for
twenty-five years and to be given this opportunity to contribute to
its future growth is truly the pinnacle of my years in choral
music,” adding, “I am deeply grateful and humbled.”
Seelig’s credentials testify to a masterly career in choral
music defined by exceptional, jaw-dropping performances and a
journey of personal triumph over intolerance. A native of Texas,
where he received his doctorate in the musical arts, Seelig came
out in 1985 and experienced the sharp end of homophobia.
Undeterred, he went on to lead the Turtle Creek Chorale, the gay
men’s chorus in Dallas, for twenty years taking them to
international acclaim. Most recently, Seelig served as the Artistic
Director-in-Residence of the Gay & Lesbian Association of
Choruses (GALA).
