The Derrick Fox Choral Series on MusicSpoke

A few years ago, Derrick Fox called us and said something like, “Here’s the thing. All the South African choral music being performed in the United States is written by white South African composers. I think at least some of it should be written by black South African composers.”

“Um, we think that too. What can we do to help?”

That’s how the Derrick Fox Choral Series started. In the beginning, it was just black South Africans like Sabelo Mthembu and Thabo Matshego. The series has now expanded to promote underrepresented composers in the States as well. There are pieces by Christopher Harris and Aaron J. Fisher. There is a killer arrangement of a spiritual by Raymond Wise. There is a piece by Brandon Williams (who curates the Rutger’s Glee Club Series on MusicSpoke, and there is a piece by Derrick himself that has been featured on several All State Festivals throughout the country.
