The Choral Director’s Toolbox This Week

July 3, 2026 by wbakerfestivalsingers-org Leave a Comment

In this special Independence Day edition of The Choral Director’s Toolbox, host Dr. William Baker reflects on the inseparable relationship between freedom and the choral arts in Land of the Free.  Drawing inspiration from America’s 250th anniversary and the nation’s role as host of the FIFA World Cup, Dr. Baker considers the freedoms that make artistic expression possible and challenges choral leaders to be steadfast guardians of liberty, creativity, and the human spirit.  Through personal stories and historical reflection, he reminds us that choral music flourishes best where people are free to sing, create, and express their deepest convictions.

In today’s listener question, a conductor asks whether contracted soloists and instrumentalists should still be paid after a voluntary program change cancels their services.  Dr. Baker offers a clear answer grounded in both contractual responsibility and professional integrity, emphasizing that honoring commitments is essential to earning the trust and respect of the musical community.

Today’s inspiration is America the Beautiful, arranged by Robert Russell Bennett and performed in 1962 by The Robert Shaw Chorale, featuring the incomparable Florence Kopleff.  This stirring performance provides a fitting musical tribute to the freedoms and opportunities celebrated throughout the episode.

Join us for a thoughtful conversation on liberty, leadership, and the enduring responsibility to protect the artistic freedoms that allow choral music to thrive.
