With members from Union, Somerset, Bergen, Hudson and Middlesex counties, The Choral Art Society is a non-profit community chorus dedicated to the study and performance of great choral works. It originated in September, 1962, as The Suburban Symphony Chorus under the direction of Peter Sozio. In September, 1963, Evelyn Bleeke became the director and in 1964 the chorus formed an independent organization under its present name. Mrs. Bleeke served the organization as director for 32 seasons, followed by Thomas Booth and Kathleen Healy-Wedsworth, for two seasons each. James S. Little is starting his twelfth season as musical director.
The Choral Art Society of New Jersey, New Season Announcement
Interested in learning and singing great choral music? If so, you’re invited to join The Choral Art Society of New Jersey. Rehearsals are held weekly on Tuesdays from 8:00 to 10:00 P.M., September through May, at The Presbyterian Church in Westfield, located at the corner of Mountain Avenue and East Broad Street. The season’s first rehearsal is on Tuesday, September 7, 2010, with registration and music purchase starting at 7:30 P.M. Rehearsals are held in the church’s choir room. The entrance is on Mountain Avenue. Singers interested in joining are invited to attend a rehearsal and meet with James S. Little, the Society’s musical director.
The fall semester will be spent preparing for the Saturday, January 22, 2011, performance of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Christmas Oratorio.
The Winter/Spring semester rehearsals will start Tuesday, January 25, 2011, in preparation for an afternoon performance on Saturday, May 15, 2009, at Calvary Episcopal Church, Summit, NJ. The program will feature Beethoven’s Mass in C.
