Tears for choir’s farewell note

DANDENONG, AUSTRALIA — YESTERDAY marked a sad day in local
history as the Dandenong Choral Society held its final concert.

The society, which held its first concert in 1896, has been
forced to wind up because of declining membership and increasing
costs.

President Glenys Cecil, who has been a choir member for about 15
years, said ending the society was an immensely hard decision.

“I burst into tears. It’s been a part of our life and the choir
is a family choir. Everyone is there for each other.”

While the exact age of the choir is unknown, it was first
mentioned in the South Bourke and Mornington Journal (now known as
the Greater Dandenong Weekly) on September 16, 1896.

Over the years, the choir has had many notable
performances.
