As we swing into the New Year and reconsider the political atmosphere of the past 12 months, it “strikes” me that the Gershwins’ “Strike Up the Band,” a paean to patriotism and peace written for the 1927 musical of same name, is more relevant than ever before.
Back in the late ‘70s, Chanticleer premiered my arrangement, but they elected to omit the verse, a cautionary anti-war statement. The performance received a rousing ovation.
You can hear it on my site, kenmalucelli(dot)com. Go into the Secular Choral page, scroll down to title and click on the blue play tab. Notice that in sections the singers imitate trumpets, percussion and other instruments.
If you’re looking for a spirit-raising, crowd-pleasing number for an upcoming concert, I’d appreciate your keeping this arrangement in mind. And if you’d like to view a copy of the score, just let me know.
Thanks much for the consideration and…
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Ken Malucelli
