HAWKES BAY, NZ — Young and old from throughout the region came
to sing for their chance to perform for an international crowd at
the Rugby World Cup.
Locally formed choirs will perform the anthems at cup games this
year and 30 Bay residents will be selected for the honour. They
will learn the Japanese, French and Canadian anthems for the McLean
Park games.
Auditions and workshops held at Taradale High School yesterday
will determine the final choir, and will be the last official
practice for those selected until just before the games.
Audition organiser Joe Christensen said it was a good turnout
for the auditions and workshop, which had been organised in just a
week and a half after the New Zealand Choral Federation finalised
its agreement with Rugby New Zealand 2011.
They were looking for the region’s best singers and hoped to
reflect New Zealand’s diversity as well.
