CANBERRA, AUSTRALIA — They’re back. Due to popular demand, the Australian Rugby Choir will tonight, for the first time in eight years, take to the pitch at Canberra Stadium ahead of the players’ arrival on the ground.
Some 30 choristers will belt out the official song, to the tune of Click go the shears, starting with the words: “From the Heart of Mountain country, where the Brumby reigns supreme, From the country’s capital there comes a rugby team”.
Delighted Brumbies fans will welcome the choir’s return after years in the outer – its members have continued to sing in the precinct of Canberra Stadium, just not as part of the official on-field line-up.
Choir president Neil Fleming said fellow choristers had received the news with “universal surprise and enthusiasm”. Brumbies management contacted him on Tuesday morning to extend the invitation, meaning he was able to tell members at practice that evening.
“Literally the eyes lit up,” he said.
