The Lutheran Youth Choir of North America announces the 2010 winner of its first annual International Choral Composition Contest:  Ronald A. Nelson of Minneapolis, Minnesota, composer of the winning anthem, "Why Not the Earth?"  This contest supports the compostion of excellent sacred music suitable for high-school-age choirs.  Entries were received this year from Japan, Italy, Canada, and the United States.  In addition to the $500 cash prize, Nelson's piece will be performed at the Lutheran Youth Choir's new Festival of American Vocal Music in Wittenberg, Germany, in August 2011.  Nelson, a well-known composer of organ, choral, and church music, was Director of Music at Westwood Lutheran Church in St. Louis Park, Minnesota for nearly forty years.  While at Westwood, he built a parish choir school that became a model for church music education across the US.  The deadline for the 2011 composition contest entries is April 1, 2011.  Complete information may be found on the Lutheran Youth Choir of North America's website, www.lutheranyouthchoir.org
