Dear conductors and ChoralNet users,
I composed this short but emotional piece as a reflection on the innocent children who are lost during wars fought by adults. It was inspired by the children who die every day from hunger, as well as those who suffer injustice and violence at the hands of adults in our troubled world. As Dostoevsky famously said, our world is in such desperate need of beauty to be saved — a beauty that can heal and restore hope. And wars, unfortunately, wipe out all the beautiful things that all children can and should enjoy.
There are countless wars and genocides ongoing around us, and as adults, we can only feel a deep sense of shame. However, it is also our duty to condemn those who incite these conflicts and those who permit their continuation.
This composition is intended to be a moment of shared reflection on the unimaginable pain endured by families who lose their children to these human-made horrors every day. My hope is that all those young souls, taken from us too soon, will one day find themselves in a world of peace, friendship, sharing, understanding, tolerance, and harmony — the world that we all wish for and that our world should become.
