FOREST CITY, IA — A man stood outside Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City on Saturday afternoon and asked if someone wanted to hear his Waldorf College choir story. He grew up in a fundamentalist Baptist church near Bricelyn, Minn. before he attended Waldorf in 1961.
Back then, the student lunch room was in the basement of Salveson Hall. “The choir used to practice where the ballroom (in Salveson) is,” James Johnson said. “We used to line up for lunch and you couldn’t help but hear the choir practice.” “All of a sudden, I fell in love with Lutheran liturgical music,” Johnson said. It was music that changed his life.
